Doodle Portal

2021

Exhibited at:
Buffalo Central Terminal

“A similarly fruitful meeting point of site, work, and audience happened with my first public project, also completed in the fall of 2021. Buffalo Central Terminal was undergoing renovations and required a welcoming entryway that also prevented the passage of cars into the site. Naturally, it felt irrelevant to have my artistic voice be the driving factor in a project that would be most interacted with by the neighborhood around the site; Buffalo’s east side has long been overlooked by our city’s political class. I worked with a youth summer camp for neighborhood kids that met down the street from the site to create a series of doodles that were lasercut into acrylic panels that spun in the wind. Doodle Portal was unfortunately murdered by the logistics of municipal snow removal and mismanagement in the blizzard of 2022, a regrettable but also obviously quite metaphorically loaded outcome for the public artwork.” — Nando Alvarez-Perez
